DUI Evaluations for Other States

DUI Evaluations for Other States

I sometimes get calls asking whether I do Substance Abuse Evaluations for offenses that have occurred in another state? For example, a person from Baton Rouge traveled to Houston, TX. and he was charged with a DUI. He may call to ask if I can do his Substance Abuse Evaluation in Baton Rouge, and send it to the appropriate person in Houston? The answer is yes.
Each state has its own requirements for what needs to be done to rectify a DUI charge, yet every state will require you to receive a Substance Abuse Evaluation from a Licensed Professional. Some states have stricter laws than others. For example, North Carolina has probably the most punitive consequences, yet each state will require some type of DUI evaluation.
The Substance Abuse Evaluation typically has 3 parts. First, there is a general assessment of the level of substance abuse, the second part is the diagnosis, and the third part is the recommendations given by the evaluator. It is good to know the basic requirements of the state that you received the DUI, and communicate this with the evaluator, so that he will not duplicate recommendations.
