You can spend years doing what life asks of you—working, caring for others, meeting expectations—and gradually lose touch with what is happening inside.
What do I feel? What matters to me? What would I say if I trusted my own voice?
These questions invite us toward the True Self. They are also at the heart of THE PROMISE LAND, a song inspired by a poem HollyKem Sunseri wrote in our book, A Roadmap to the Soul.
“I’ve spent so long looking outside,
Searching for something already inside.”
The song invites us to consider the Promise Land as an inner experience: learning to live with greater honesty, faith, love, and freedom.

Listening to the voice within
“To trust the voice I’ve buried so deep,
To listen within, to finally be.”
It can be easy to hear everyone else’s needs more clearly than our own. Over time, we may become practiced at pleasing, performing, or holding everything together.
The song invites us to pause and listen.
Listening within begins with simple honesty: I feel disappointed. I need rest. This matters to me. I want to say something.
We do not have to act on every feeling or thought. We can acknowledge our inner experience and then choose how to respond. That space between recognition and response gives us room to live more intentionally.
Coming home to the True Self involves becoming more familiar with the voice we may have learned to silence.
Giving yourself permission to feel
“I can feel the pain.
I can feel the joy.
I can forgive.
I can have a voice.”
These lines hold an invitation to make room for the fullness of being human.
Sometimes we welcome joy while trying to push away sadness, disappointment, or fear. Yet the song asks us to give our hearts permission to feel again.
That can begin gently. Take a breath. Notice what is present. Name it without immediately judging yourself for having it.
You might ask:
- What am I feeling right now?
- What needs my attention?
- What would a caring response to myself look like?
You can feel something deeply and still choose your next step thoughtfully. You can speak honestly while respecting another person. You can acknowledge pain without having to resolve everything today.
Rediscovering the openness of a child
“To love as a child loves, open and true,
Without all the walls that I’ve been living through.”
The childlike freedom in THE PROMISE LAND points toward qualities many of us long to recover: wonder, sincerity, playfulness, and the willingness to give and receive love.
We can carry those qualities into adulthood alongside discernment and healthy boundaries.
Perhaps that means laughing without feeling self-conscious. Letting someone know you care. Trying something new without requiring yourself to be good at it immediately. Allowing a moment of joy to be enough.
The song offers a tender reminder:
“The child I thought I’d lost
Has always been right here.”
We can begin making room for that openness again.
Learning to love, forgive, and stand
“This is soulful living,
This is who I am.
Learning how to love again,
Learning how to stand.”
The word learning matters.
Soulful living unfolds through practice. We practice telling the truth with kindness. We practice receiving love. We practice standing by what matters to us.
Forgiveness may be part of that journey, too. It can take time. It does not require pretending that harm was acceptable, restoring trust before it is earned, or abandoning boundaries.
Each of us can ask: What would one honest, loving step look like today?
It might be a conversation. An apology. A boundary. A quiet moment of prayer. Or the decision to stop dismissing a feeling that needs attention.
Letting faith accompany the journey
“With faith in my heart,
And the sunlight on my hands,
Free as a child,
Here in the Promise Land.”
Faith runs through the song as a source of openness and courage.
For you, that may mean bringing your honest feelings into prayer, asking God for guidance, or taking a small step before you can see the whole road ahead.
You do not need to have every answer to begin listening within. You can approach the journey with curiosity, patience, and a willingness to grow.
Listen—and notice what speaks to you
We invite you to listen to THE PROMISE LAND with a few quiet minutes to yourself.
As the song plays, notice the line that stays with you. You do not need to force an insight. Simply pay attention.
Afterward, finish this sentence:
“Today, coming home to myself could look like…”
Let your answer be small enough to practice.
